Pressure-treated wood railing is still the most widely used option across Charleston, especially in areas like Johns Island, Awendaw, and older parts of West Ashley. It fits the traditional Lowcountry look and works well for larger decks and raised homes. Most systems are built using southern yellow pine, which is treated to resist insects and moisture. Common finishes include natural wood, stained browns, or painted white to match classic coastal homes.

While it’s the most cost-effective option upfront, it does require ongoing maintenance to hold up in humidity and coastal conditions. We make sure framing is tight, level, and built to code so the railing doesn’t loosen over time. When maintained properly, wood railing can perform well, but it’s typically best suited for homeowners who are okay with periodic sealing, staining, or repainting to keep it looking right.
