On Sullivan’s Island, most deck and porch railings are still pressure-treated wood, especially on the classic beach houses around the island and through the station areas. It fits the style and has been used out there for years, but with the salt air, wind, and sand, it takes a lot of upkeep to keep it in good shape. Lately, more homeowners are starting to switch over to aluminum or cable railing, especially closer to the beachfront, to cut down on maintenance and keep a more open view. It’s still mostly wood for now, but you can see the shift happening as homes get updated and people want something that lasts longer in those conditions.
