In Awendaw, deck railing is still mostly pressure-treated wood, especially on homes off Highway 17 and out toward the more wooded, spread-out properties. It fits the rural Lowcountry style and works well for larger porches and raised decks. With the humidity and shade from heavy tree cover, wood tends to hold up fine as long as it’s maintained. It’s the go-to choice out here because it blends in naturally and works well for the way homes are built in the area.
