On James Island, a lot of deck railings are still pressure-treated wood, especially around Riverland Terrace and out toward the Folly side, and they can work just fine when they’re maintained properly. At the same time, more homeowners are starting to switch to aluminum for something that holds up better in the humidity and salt air without all the upkeep. Both options make sense depending on the home and budget, wood for a more traditional look, aluminum for a cleaner, low-maintenance upgrade that lasts longer.
