On Folly Beach, most deck and porch railings are built with pressure-treated wood, especially on raised beach houses and rentals near the water. Between the salt air, sand, and constant wind, railings take a lot of wear, so wood is often used because it’s easy to repair and replace when needed. You’ll see it all over the island on elevated decks and stairs leading up from the ground level. At the same time, more homes are starting to switch to aluminum or cable railing to cut down on maintenance and keep a more open feel toward the ocean. It really comes down to balancing durability with that laid-back beach look Folly is known for.
