Out in Awendaw, most deck railings are still pressure-treated wood, especially on homes spread off Highway 17 and back toward the quieter, wooded areas. It fits the setting and is practical for larger porches and raised decks, plus it’s easy to work with when homes are a little more spread out. With the mix of humidity and shade from tree cover, wood holds up fine when it’s maintained, but you’ll also see more composite and aluminum starting to come in on newer builds. It really comes down to the property, some stick with wood for the traditional look, while others are starting to choose materials that require less upkeep over time.
